The Facebook profile poster for Lauren White Goes On a Date did not bode well. Our increasingly cyber society has often been portrayed on stage, and rarely is it successful. White’s approach is rather different in that she brings the virtual – a shortlist of males from okcupid.com – right onto the stage of The New Theatre. This is achieved with the help of the audience, who weigh in on each decision, from outfit to single male candidate.
White has no real problems with relationships or dating, she just hasn't found her perfect man yet (not an unheard of occurrence). Neither are there any judgments or commentary on online dating itself. There is no structured plot or writing; but this is not a play, but rather something closer to a comedy show. But it is a genuinely entertaining, absorbing show at that. By dint of its audience inclusion – never taken to uncomfortable lengths – there is a real investment in its outcome.
Lauren White Goes On a Date does not make you leave the theatre pondering deep questions regarding online dating or the evolution of modern relationships – but then, it doesn’t profess to. What really makes this show more than mediocre is Lauren White herself: charming, funny and more than able to win over those who would judge books by their cover (or by their Facebook profile).
