For magic and delight, Macnas has no match. With their characteristically beautiful creations and boundless energy, the label ‘for all the family’ is truly deserved. Rumpus, we are told, is Macnas’ “boutique travelling show’ and the atmospheric setting of the Civic Amphitheatre suits it down to the ground. A glowing, exquisite paper sculpture hare acts as both backdrop and central figure of the three stories of Rumpus. Love, madness and courage are the grand themes of these tales, interpreted with humour, music and a strong dash of mischief.
Taken from a variety of sources – A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Alice in Wonderland and a folk tale – these stories are told with a fun, theatrical and wicked flair. There is Shakespeare told with cabaret and a token mustache, the story of God testing four animals with dance and very funny audience interaction. The only weak spot was Alice’s tea party, brief to the point of bemusement.
In all, however, Macnas present a wild and wicked Rumpus indeed. Led by four talented and hilarious actors who gambol ably through the show, this is a production that showcases Macnas’ years of experience in that sought after thing: genuine fun.
